ABSTRACT
In line with the development of socio-political relationship between Vietnam and other countries, the question of implementing interculturalism in EFL classes has become a must and an urgent need in language education in Vietnam. However, this model has not been applied in reality so far. This study, on one hand, investigates some fundamental challenges that prevent this approach from taking place in real educational settings, and provides a number of refined and selected classroom activities that can be used in literature-based EFL classes at the university level in Vietnam on the other hand. Its objectives are based on the theories of Reader-response criticism by Louise M. Rosenblatt (1985, 1999), Cross-culturalism by Deena R. Levine and Mara B. Adelman (1993), community learning and Internationalism by John Corbert (2010). The study aims at setting up a network of intercultural classroom activities that can be a rich resource for literature-based teaching and learning. Basically, the study calls for an awareness of implementing Interculturalism in EFL classes from which literature is used as a medium to learn academic subject matter, and as a means to enhance the students’ cross-communicative skill in modern time. Thus, the outcome of the project can contribute a significant part in English language education in general, and literature-based language teaching and learning in particular.
