ABSTRACT
Long-span cable supported bridges are highly susceptible to wind excitation and the aerodynamic instability such as flutter and buffeting phenomena play an important role in design of these bridges. This study presents methods for predicting the phenomenon of aerodynamic instability and buffeting responses. Firstly, the flutter instability is predicted by an empirically method based on flutter derivative formulation. Flutter derivatives are obtained by Theodosen’s function from a general flat plate section. Modal output from the section model is used to estimate flutter stability analysis. The complex Eigenvalue problem is solved with an iterative procedure in order to find flutter critical velocity. Secondly, the buffeting response analysis in frequency domain based on Scanlan’s formulation is performed to predict power spectral density and expected maximum value. Then the modal response components are summed by using square root method for estimating the total responses. Finally, an example of a general long-span bridge section will be conducted
