ABSTRACT
The verb “ĂN” in Vietnamese language and the verb “먹다” (MOK-TA) inKorean language belong to polysemy. The transfer of meaning in this pair of verbs is basedon some important mechanisms of meaning transfer that are necessary to clarify.Proceeding from this requirement, the paper focuses on investigating the pair of verbsinvolved and then comparing them to find out the linguistic and also cultural similaritiesand differences between the verb “ĂN” and the verb “먹다” (MOK-TA) in the twolanguages from the cognitive linguistics. From the results of the research the paper willdraw some linguistic features and also socio-cultural features contained in these verbs.Key words: Ăn (eating), …먹다 (mok-ta), cognitive linguistics, polysemic words,mechanism, meaning transfer
