ABSTRACT
This paper aims to study conceptualmetaphor and metonymy in perceptionsabout life in idioms containing the element“ăn” in Vietnamese (eat in English) - withreference to the word “mok-ta” in Korean.Based on theory of cognitive linguistics, wehave found a number of metaphorical andmetonymic expressions, especially theinterweaving between conceptual metaphorand metonymy in the same idioms containingthe element “ăn” in Vietnamese and “mokta”in Korean. Accordingly, 7 idioms,selected out of 300 related idioms, have beenanalysed to study the interweaving ofconceptual metaphor and metonymy. Theresearch findings indicate similarities anddifferences in perceptions about life reflectedin metaphorical and metonymic expressionscontaining element “ăn” in Vietnamese and“mok-ta” in Korean.
