 Gender Differences in the Research Motivation of Vietnamese Academic Staff

Academic research has increasingly become an important responsibility of academic staff at universities. Publishing output has been used as the main indicator to reflect the research productivity of academic staff. Previous studies indicate that motivation to undertake research of academic staff is one of the significant factors influencing their research productivity. Motivation is a psychological aspect of human which reflects attitudes and behaviours of people. Currently, how to increase research motivation of academic staff attracts great concerns of university leaders. This study investigates the influences of gender on the research motivation of academic staff at a research-oriented university in Vietnam. Using questionnaire survey data collected from 526 academic staff at four colleges and two junior colleges of that university, the author found differences in the types of research motivation between male and female academic staff. The findings help the university leaders in modifying its research policy that supports academic staff in order to increase their research motivation.
