ABSTRACT
Doing scientific research is one of the most basic responsibilities of academics in higher education, beside teaching and services. Academics’ success in research depends very much on their commitment to the activity. Their commitment can be recognised and/or measured by looking at their attitudes to and behaviours in research. A visible outcome of their research commitment is research productivity, in terms of scholarly publications such as peer-reviewed journal articles, books and textbooks. This research project applies a mixed-methodology approach to study the commitment to research of academics of a research-oriented university in Vietnam. It aims to achieve the following goals: first, to explore academics’ perceptions of academics research and its importance to them; second, to discover individual and institutional factors that have positive or negative influences on their research commitment and productivity; and last, to model the relationships between productivity in research and a variety of other constructs including institutional commitment, commitment to research, and pro-research-productivity behaviours. The results are expected to be used by the university to develop policies and procedures that may improve academics’ level of commitment to and high-quality practices in research, in the local educational context of Vietnam.
