ABSTRACT
The ESL and EFL literature has found that motivation is a significant factor influencing the frequency of language learning strategy use which then in turn directly relates to language performance. However, research results have not been always consistent depending on culture and learning contexts as well as other learner variables. Very little research has been done on the relationship between learners’ motivation, use of learning strategies and language performance in Vietnam. The study aims to investigate the associations among these factors in the Vietnamese high school context. Data are collected from high school students in Central Vietnam by using the mini-AMTB (Attitude Motivation Test Battery) and SILL (Strategy Inventory for Language Learning) questionnaires. Statistical analyses are conducted to examine the correlations between the factors taken into consideration and implications for curriculum designers, course developers and classroom language teachers are discussed.
