ABSTRACT
The study investigates the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on EFL learning by non-English major students in Vietnamese colleges and universities. Motivation has long been found to be correlated with the language performance of students. However, little research has been done on the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on EFL learning, especially in the Vietnamese educational context. The Work Preference Inventory (Amabile et al., 1994) was used and a sample of 120 students from 5 universities and colleges was randomly selected. T-test analyses were conducted to compare the intrinsic and extrinsic motivation between two groups of EFL learning students: the most successful one and the least successful one. The differences in the influence of the two types of motivation have practical implications for teachers teaching EFL to non-English major EFL students.
