ABSTRACT
There has been extensive research on cooperative learning (CL) in ESL/EFLcontexts; however, research results remain inconsistent. This study aims to investigate whether Vietnamese students‘ beliefs guide their learning behaviors (i.e. their willingness to communicate). Data were collected from students majoring in Business English and teachers delivering Business English courses in universities in North,South and Central Vietnam by means of questionnaires. T-test analyses were performed to compare teachers‘ and students‘ beliefs of CL and regression analyses were conducted to study the relationship between students‘ beliefs of CL, personality traits and their willingness to communicate. The results indicate what students believe in CL, to some extent, differs from what their teachers believe. Students‘ personality traits of extraversion and openness are found to be correlated with their willingness to communicate whereas students‘ beliefs of CL are not. This necessitates further research on conditions when students‘ beliefs of CL may have an effect on their learning behaviors.
Key words: cooperative learning, personality traits, willingness to communicate, students’ beliefs, Vietnam.
