ABSTRACT
Wollastonite is of great interest as a filler of cross-linked polymers based on epoxies, since it has micro-reinforcing and strengthening effects. For modifying epoxy polymers, rubber-seed oil (RSO) is also interesting, as a by-product of obtaining natural rubber, which has found no qualified technical application in the Hevea brasiliensis habitat countries. Moreover, RSOs contain up to 35% of higher saturated and unsaturated fatty acids that are known to be able to influence the heat-convertible resins hardening processes and the polymeric matrix-filler interface interaction nature. We studied the influence of wollastonite upon the properties of epoxy compositions modified by rubber-seed oil. RSO modification significantly increases the sol-fration content and vitality of epoxy compositions. At the same time, the oil is not entirely extracted by acetone, and a part thereof is apparently built into the spatial network of a cross-linked polymer. The degree of epoxy compositions cross-linking also decreases significantly with adding wollastonite to their formulas. This is the case for the fillers of various dispersion degrees. The reason why wollastonite has such an effect on epoxies hardening processes may be the selective sorption of the components of epoxies to be hardened on its surface. We have found that about 26-28% of AP-2 and 10-15% of epoxy oligomer are adsorbed on the filler surface. Pre-mixing RSO with wollastonite increases the content of epoxy composition gel fractions, since the adsorption of epoxy and hardener on the filler surface is decreased due to its interaction with the oil.
