ABSTRACT
A proposed procedure to synthesize a composite material from nanoscale TiO2 and Phu-Yen’s diatomite includes three main stages. Firstly, Hue’s ilmenite ore was decomposed to obtain K4Ti3O8 by submolten salt method (SMS); Secondly, K4Ti3O8 was leached in the high concentration of oxalic acid solution to yield the nanoscale TiO2 precursor; Finally, the nanoscale TiO2 was deposited on the surface of Phu-Yen’s diatomite. The oxalate-leaching process was carried out with concentration acid of 80 wt.%, reaction temperature of 150oC, reaction time of 3 hours, and a solid:liquid mass ratio of 1:4 under constant stirring speed. The obtained precursor was mixed with Phu-Yen’s diatomite with the mass ratio of 1:15 in water. The mixture was stirred on magnetic equipment during 30 minutes, then was put into supersonic tank to keep on stirring. The composite sample was dried at 105oC for 24 hours then calcinated at 550oC for 4 hours. The formed products in each stage were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and/or transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained results indicated that TiO2 nanoparticles about 10÷30nm, mainly in the anatase phase was homogeneously coated on the surface of Phu-Yen’s diatomite.
