ABSTRACT
Smart money effect happens when funds receiving greater net flows subsequently outperform their less popular peers; in other words, investors are able to predict funds' performance and invest accordingly. Many researches documented the fund selection ability of mutual fund investors while others insisted that the smart money effect does not exist when the momentum factor is taken into account. While prior studies focus mainly on the U.S. and the U.K. market, we investigate the mutual fund universe in the Asia-Pacific region, especially Japan. By using precise data and advanced testing methodologies, we find evidence that the smart money effect is alive and robust in Japan.
