ABSTRACT
Marine environment is a complex environment of corrosion problems for reinforced concrete structures. Beside the mechanical attack caused by waves, the chemical agents in seawater are the largest cause of corrosion, which change the hydration of cement products, thereby degrading concrete quality and corrosive of reinforcement. There are many solutions such as protecting or enhancing the durability of concrete for coastal structure. However, economic issues need to be considered. The paper presented an experimental study on the fabrication of sand concrete that was used for coastal structures, in which binder system was incorporation of cement, ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) and fly ash (FA). The results of this study showed that: compressive strength of sand concrete mixtures reached from 50.2 MPa to 59.1 MPa; the grade of water permeability resistance reached higher than B14; underwater abrasion amount was low; chloride penetration was "very low" level according to ASTM C1202. Sand concrete mixture containing 50% GGBFS reduced 52,7% CO2 emission, and reduced 31.2% the cost of concrete compared to conventional grade 40 MPa concrete. Sand concrete mixtures using binder system (cement, fly ash, GGBFS) met the technical requirements of concrete materials for coastal structures, ensured the economic efficiency and environment sustainability.
