 Issues and Challenges in Using ICT for Teaching Speaking Skills in Vietnam

The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the issues and challenges of language teachers on using ICT to teach speaking skills for students in Vietnam. In this case study, 20 primary school teachers from 4 different provinces in Vietnam took part in this qualitative study to find out the issues and challenges they had encountered in the process of using ICT in their teaching of speaking skills. Data collected from reflection notes and focus group interviews were analysed in terms of different components of Activity Theory. The results indicated that teaching speaking skills in Vietnam using ICT had a variety of issues and challenges including lack of ICT competence, lack of ICT facilities, oversized classes, heavy teaching load, lack of technical support and lack of support from Rector and relevant authorities and. Indeed, all of these need to be addressed in a broad context including. As a result, the Ministry of Education and Training of Vietnam, other relevant authorities, the Rectors of the school and the language teachers themselves should all involve in solving those issues and challenges. Lastly, this study suggested the recommendations to better the situation.
