Architectural design to efficiently exploit natural ventilation offers a lot of architectural advantages. One of the biggest advantages is that it saves cooling energy and creates user-friendly living environment. Today, high-rise apartment buildings become one of the common housing types in cities around the world. Comparison of the natural ventilation efficiency of typical floor plans of this housing type is a theoretical and practical problem in the present trend towards sustainable architecture. The paper presents quantitative results on the natural ventilation efficiency of 6 typical forms of high-rise apartment floor plans. By using the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) method, the wind velocity and wind field in a representative apartment were compared and evaluated. The analysis results show that some floor plan types perform better than these others, in terms of natural ventilation. The results of the study help designers to choose the optimal floor plan configuration in designing this building type.
