ABSTRACT
The Double Friction Pendulum (DFP) bearing is an adaptation of the well-known Single Friction Pendulum (SFP) bearing. The advantage of the DFP bearing is its capacity to accommodate larger displacements compared to a traditional SFP bearing. This paper presents a numerical modeling approach of base-isolated high-rise buildings subjected to earthquake excitations with an implementation of a DFP bearing system. The numerical model presented herein considers earthquake excitations in both horizontal (x and y) and vertical (z) directions. The friction load of the bearing surface is governed by a modified Bouc-Wen model, in which the friction coefficient depends on the sliding velocity and the pressure between the bearing surfaces. An example of 9-storey steel building isolated by a DFP bearing system is then introduced in the paper. The analysis results with respect to both fixed-base and isolated configurations of the building show a high effectiveness of the bearing system in reduction of the seismic response of the building. The effect of the vertical component of the earthquake excitation on the behavior of the bearing is also evaluated and discussed in detail.
