ABSTRACT
The reservoir of Cointzio (capacity 70 Mm3) provides 20% of the drinking water of the city of Morelia (1M inhabitants, Michoacán, Mexico). It is located in the volcanic Mexican belt and has a sub-tropical climate. In 2009 an extensive field campaign was undertaken in order to characterize hydrodynamic and biogeochemical functioning of the reservoir. The vertical distributions of oxygen, turbidity, pH, nutrients, Chlorophyll a were measured monthly. The vertical temperature profiles were monitored every 30 minutes using an on-site thermic chain. The reservoir of Cointzio revealed to be extremely turbid. Secchi depth never exceeds 0.3m which implies a very low light penetration. Both heat transfer by shortwaves solar radiation and photosynthesis activity are limited to a water depth that does not exceed a some tens of centimeters bellow water surface. Despite this, the reservoir presents very high Chlorophyll a concentrations (until 100 μgL-1) which complicates even more water potabilization processes. This study clarifies the interaction between hydrodynamical and biogeochemical processes within the reservoir and provides a database for further water quality modelling. The results presented here could be useful for the managers of turbid reservoirs under tropical and subtropical influences in Mexico but also in other countries.
