The objective of this study is to develop rice husk/high density polyethylene (HDPE) composites. Rice husks are selected in this study for two reasons: rice husks are waste product and annual production of about 7 million tones in Vietnam, and rice husks contain high amount of silica (about 20 wt%) that may increase the mildew and fungi resistant of its composite. Furthermore, the use of rice husks in the production of natural fiber plastic composites (NFPC) reduces the use of wood and decreases the deforestation in Vietnam, one of the main reasons of flood. NFPC could be main source of construction material for citizens in remote areas. The effects of rice husk compositions and coupling agents on the mechanical properties of rice husk/HDPE composite were studied. The results show that the mechanical properties of rice husk composite developed in this study are comparable with a commercially available sample from wood/HDPE composite. In addition to the results of this study, an extensive literature review on the mechanical properties of rice husk plastic composites and their potential applications will also be presented in this paper.
