ABSTRACT
Zeolite are open investigated as potential adsorbent for CO
2
adsorption
and separation. Depending on the zeolite topology and composition (Si/Al ratio and exta-framework cations) the CO
2
adsorption heats at low coverages vary from -20 to -60 kJ/mol, and with increasing surface coverage adsorption heat either stay approximately constant or they quickly drop down, as the case maybe. Experimental adsorption heats obtained for FAU zeolite having various Si/Al ratios and exchanged with various extra-framework cations are discussed in the light of results of periodic density function theory calculation corrected for the description of dispersion interactions. The CO
2
adsorption in Li-FAU, Na-FAU and K-FAU zeolite having Si/Al = 2.55 were investigated in particular. The CO
2
adsorption and adsorption isotherms were measured by joint microcalorimetric volumetric equipment and by variable-temperature IR spectroscopy. Key factor influencing the stability of CO
2
adsorption complexes are identified and discussed at molecular level. The distribution and coordination of extra-framework cations are a critical factor influencing the CO
2
adsorption heats. The obtained results fit well within the general model of CO
2
adsorption heats in zeolites described recently.
