ABSTRACT
Viet Nam in recent years is striving to boost the English language education for increasing EFL proficiency among Vietnamese people and even to make English become the second language in the country in the near future through the ambitious NFL 2020 Project. However, the current situation of EFL teaching and learning in Viet Nam still has numerous existing issues left unsolved. As for English grammar instruction, traditional lessons mainly focusing on language knowledge rather than language use, grammar-based exams, large-sized classes, insufficient in-class time, etc. have become big challenges to teaching English grammar communicatively for the improvement of students’ communicative skills. This paper aims at presenting the use of the flipped classroom which recently emerged as a new pedagogical model in the world as the solution to teaching English grammar communicatively in the Vietnamese context. The benefits of the flipped approach are hoped to help eliminate the ineffectiveness of the traditional face-to-face lessons in tackling the existing problems. The paper also proposes a model or a framework for EFL teachers to teach English grammar communicatively in Vietnamese EFL teaching context based on the flipped classroom model and the framework suggested Celce-Murcia & Hilles.
