ABSTRACT
The sea-level rise and typhoon waves are considered the leading causes of the coastal line changes and Vietnam's significant erosion. Coastal changes and erosion are phenomena caused by anthropogenic impact and climate change in recent years. With a rise in the highly unpredicted typhoon frequency, waves’ impact on the coasts leads to debris removal and coastline erosion. The sudden sea-level rise and unstable water surge made by the unpredicted trajectory of severe typhoon waves impact coastal constructions’ erosion and destruction. To mitigate the effects of hurricane waves on the coastal line in central Vietnam and to know more about the waves’ characteristics, this paper reports the results of a modelling approach based on the modelling system MIKE 21/3 from the Danish Hydraulic Institute (DHI) and conducted for the coastal zone from Binh Dinh to Binh Thuan, Viet Nam. Models were built for four different typhoon scenarios (from level 6 to level 12) based on the LINGLING hurricane's information filling the boundary between Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces in 2001. The results are analyzed to provide necessary information about the wave situation and the estimated impacts over the study area. The results also provide additional data for designing the protection structures and their management in coastal disaster areas.
