 The role of volunteer tourism organisations in sustainability of socio-cultural impacts of volunteer tourism: A case study of Vietnamese farms

TÓM TẮT
Volunteer tourism (VT) has been gaining the attention of scholars over 20 years. The economic, environmental, and socio-cultural impact on host communities can be enormous. However, there is very limited research on the impacts of VT on host communities especially its socio-cultural impact from the host’s point of view. The research not only presents a theoretical model of socio-cultural impacts of VT on host communities but also examines whether residents’ perceived benefits, positive and negative socio-cultural effects. The research also shows that VT organisations play an important role in sustainability of the socio-cultural impacts of VT. Semistructured interviews were conducted with different stakeholders on perceived socio-cultural impacts of VT on two farm communities in Vietnam. The findings of this study were divided into nine key themes: educational effects, job opportunities, cultural exchanges, relationships, health, awareness of environmental preservation, physical changes, promotion of tourism and local products, and community resource development. Finally, implications for host communities and VT organisations that will help to maintain and enhance the positive effects and alleviate the negative consequences and obstacles that were perceived by host stakeholders are suggested.
