ABSTRACT
In this paper, a fault tolerant control is proposed without velocity measurement, using a neural network observer and a third-order sliding mode observer for robot manipulators. The neural network (NN) observer is first designed for estimating the dynamic uncertainties. The third-order sliding mode (TOSM) observer is then designed for estimating the velocity and unknown faults without any filtration based on the estimated dynamic uncertainties. The effectiveness of the observer is also compared with second-order sliding mode observer having weakness of requiring a filtration. The obtained fault information can be used for fault detection, isolation, and identification. To compensate the effect of dynamic uncertainties and faults, a fault tolerant control strategy is proposed. Simulation result on a 2-DOF robot manipulator is presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
