ABSTRACT
Da Nang, the biggest city in Central Vietnam, had its continual transformations since the land was ceded to Vietnam at the beginning of 14th century. The history of Da Nang associates with the spreading of Vietnamese’s national territory and the war against Northern and Western invaders. As Da Nang City located as a transitional point in Indochina and Southeast Asia in general, this attracted the attention of French colonists to invaded Vietnam through this city. Within nearly a century of domination, urban planning of French in Da Nang City happened during three periods in proportions to the two French colonial exploitation periods in Indochina (1888-1919 and 1920-1939) and the last period of French rule in Vietnam (1940-1954). The aim of this study is to clarify urbanism of Da Nang City during the first French Colonial Period (1888-1919); focusing on political, economic and social aspects. Some studies from scholars in urban planning and case studies from other colonial cities in Vietnam will be used as references. The result of this research can contribute to the system of studies about the urban planning of French Indochina in general. Moreover, this study can be a reference to researchers who interested in colonial urbanism.
