ABSTRACT
Recently, butanol has been considered as a promising fuel for environmental protection due to its considerable advantages over methanol and ethanol such as high tolerance, high energy density, high ability to blend in gasoline, and less corrosive. In this paper, the authors experimentally investigated the effects of difference butanol-gasoline blends at variable conditional operations (i.e. loads and fuel equivalent ratios) on the fuel consumption and pollutant emissions (i.e. CO, HC, CO
2
and NO
x
) of a Spark-Ignition Engine. The experiments were conducted using commercial pure gasoline (RON92), Bu 5 (5% butanol-95% RON92 blend), Bu10, Bu15 and Bu20 on a 021-A-200 SEAT System Porsche Engine with 4-cylinder and 10.5 compression ratio. The results show that specific fuel consumption of the engine using butanol-gasoline bends was lower than pure gasoline. Additionally, the lowest specific fuel consumption was absorbed by Bu15 at low load and speed of engine. It is also found that concentration of CO, HC, CO
2
and NO
x
emission of butanol-gasoline blend reduce considerably in the comparison with pure gasoline.
