ABSTRACT
Considered to be the highest level of examination in the Doctorate Contest under Vietnam’s feudal regime, the Court examination played an important role in identifying high and low hierarchy of the candidates who had passed the first-degree and the second-degree examinations, which could decide the favors offered to the candidates. All the candidates were expected to succeed in Court examinations to prove their talent before the King and the Lord, and the court also, through these examinations, assessed each candidate’s knowledge and talent so as to select the right man of talent. Therefore, the Le - Trinh Dynasty attached special importance to Court examinations, especially in choosing public officials who took charge of the organization, invigilation and exam papers grading, which could choose really talented candidates who were able to work for the government.
