TÓM TẮT
The study in this paper utilizes Vietnamese firm-level data to investigate therelationship between trade liberalization and the productivity performance of Vietnam’smanufacturing sector. The data covers the years 2007 to 2016 when substantial tradeliberalization took place. The semi-parametric approach developed by Levinsohn andPetrin (2003) is used to control for simultaneity bias in the estimation of a productionfunction and to obtain TFP estimates. The empirical results are strong evidence for therobust and positive impact of trade liberalization on firm-level productivity in Vietnam.Various trade reforms have resulted in a substantial reduction in manufacturing protectionas expected. The estimated input and output tariffs show a consistent trend of significanttrade liberalization between 2007 and 2016. Some robust evidence is found to show thatthe overall impact of Vietnam's trade liberalization in the first decade following Vietnam'sWTO entry has been a positive one on productivity
