TÓM TẮT
The language of Affect is generally conveyed in novels. The article applies Appraisal theory by Martin and White (2005) to examine the linguistic realization of Affect in the English and Vietnamese translations of the novel entitled “The Little Prince”. This study utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods to analyze the data. The survey results indicate that language of Affect is realized in four semantic subcategories, including (1) Happiness, (2) Security, (3) Satisfaction, and (4) Inclination, with both positive and negative meanings, and is realized through various lexical choices. This article also analyzes the similarities and differences in the author’s selection of evaluative emotional language in translation. The findings contribute to assisting learners and writers in selecting language to express attitudes, emotions, and viewpoints when writing evaluative texts.
