TÓM TẮT
This chapter primarily focuses on the fundamental function of research in language teaching and applied linguistics. It highlights the core goals of research, namely knowledge building, theory formulation, problem-solving, analyzing trends, and professional practice enhancement. The authors emphasize the need for academic sincerity and that researchers conduct honest and worthwhile studies. This chapter offers brief descriptions of the characteristics of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods paradigms, approaches, and techniques. It further addresses the current trends and projected research directions: the growing interdisciplinarity, increased diversity, broadened scope and magnitude enabled by technology, and the emphasis on practical significance. Consequently, it highlights the crucial function that research performs, namely to identify needs, formulate solutions, improve teaching activities, and enhance the common understanding of complex phenomena in multidisciplinary fields such as applied linguistics, and language teaching and learning.
