ABSTRACT
Danang, the largest city in the central coastal area of Vietnam, has experienced the process of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation. This development has posed many environmental challenges to coastal resources and ecosystems. At present, Danang’s coastal areas are being polluted by untreated wastewater discharged directly from not only adjacent industrial parks, but also shrimp aquaculture establishments located along estuarine systems. In recent years, industrial shrimp aquaculture has remarkably developed in both large scale and area in and around Danang city. This has released considerable amount of wastewater with very high concentration of pollutants. In addition, shrimp aquaculture is considered an important
economic activity, resulting in environmental pollution, leading to the rapid exhaustion of natural resources and degrading marine biodiversity. Therefore, it is essential to plan and manage this economic activity in order to mitigate its adverse impacts on the coastal resources and ecosystems. The Strategy of Environmental Protection of Danang city up to 2010 has mentioned  the priority action that is to strengthen environmental protection and to control impacts of pollution on the coastal ecosystem from aquaculture practices (Nong
2001). This paper will address negative impacts of shrimp aquaculture on the coastal ecosystem in Danang city. It also proposes some possible remedies for planning and managing aquaculture activity in order  to protect coastal resources and ecosystems in a sustainable way.
