ABSTRACT
Many experimental and numerical modeling studies have been conducted to improve the performance of the electrostatic precipitators which are used widely in industries to control particulate matter emissions. In this study, multipoint-to-plane electrostatic precipitators (MPP-ESPs) which are one type of ESP devices were investigated for the control of nanoparticles and sub-micron particles with the advantages of low pressure drop and high particle collection efficiency. Experimental results show that the collection efficiency of the present MPP-ESPs could reach 97.6 % at applied voltage of +16 kV and the flow rate of 30 L/min. Furthermore a numerical model was developed to predict the particle collection efficiency in the these ESPs by using Eulerian and Lagrangian methods for particles with diameter d
p
≤ 100 nm and d
p
> 100 nm, respectively. Present MPP-ESPs could be used as efficient particle removal devices and the model could facilitate the design and scale-up of these ESPs to control nano- and submicron particles.
