 Camera Calibration for Speed Detection of Moving Objects using Stereo Camera

Motion speed calculation is one of the most important requirements today. It is applied everywhere, such as the buildings, streets, or even in sports. In this paper, we will introduce a simple method that can detect speed of moving objects in real-time. This paper focuses on the determination of the traveling speed of a moving object using camera calibration. The target moving object is detected using background extraction and region based segmentation. After that, the distance traveled by the moving object is calculated based on mapping the coordinates of the centroid over the frames to the world coordinates by camera calibration and calculating the disparity using stereo vision, then the speed is estimated. Experiments show that, the proposed method is simple, computationally inexpensive, fault tolerance and efficiency.
