ABSTRACT
This study empirically examines how internal firm attributes and external domestic environment are correlated to the intensity of exports of firms in textile and clothing industry. Using cross-sectional firm-level data from the World Bank’s surveys on productivity and investment climate in major exporting Asian economies in a tobit estimation framework that properly controls for possible sample selection, the analysis in this study finds that firm characteristics and external constraints both significantly influence the intensity of exports. Specifically, firms of past export experience, larger size and imported material use are more likely to export more intensively than others while those with foreign technology use and longer establishment do less. Besides, there is no statistically significant evidence that managers with more experience in the industry can help firms export more. Domestic environmental factors are more likely to influence the export intensity of firms than export propensity, in the sense that constraints from various infrastructure and administrative conditions significantly hinder firms from exporting more intensively. The findings closely illustrate positioning characteristics of Asian firms in the value system of the global textile and clothing industry. Such findings also support the implication that policies should set priority in improving domestic labor market, export infrastructure and administration in order to motivate firms in this industry devote more efforts in serving foreign markets.
