ABSTRACT
This study examines (a) Vietnamese EFL learners’ knowledge of verb-noun and adjective-noun collocations at three word frequency levels: 1000, 2000, and 3000, (b) knowledge of the form-meaning connection of single-word items at the same frequency levels, and (c) the relationship between knowledge of collocation and form-meaning connection of single word items. A total of 100 students took a 180-item collocation test and a new version of the Vocabulary Levels Test. The findings of the study indicated that (a) the participants had insufficient knowledge of collocation, (b) there was little difference between knowledge of adjective-noun and verb-noun collocations, (c) knowledge of form-meaning connection was much greater than collocational knowledge, (d) the development of collocational knowledge was found to be affected by frequency in the same way as single-word items, and (e) there was a positive relationship between knowledge of collocation and knowledge of form-meaning connection.
