ABSTRACT
In geotechnical engineering, the stability of rigid footing related to eccentric vertical loads is an important aspect. Because the number of superstructure building has increased and great earthquakes occur regularly. This study focuses the ultimate bearing capacity of footing on sandy soil against eccentric vertical load. For two dimensional analysis of footing-soil system, rigid plastic finite element method (RPFEM) has been applied to calculate the ultimate bearing capacity of footing under eccentric vertical load. Moreover, the most of previous studies analysed the ultimate bearing capacity of footing by no using interface element between at the footing-soil contact plane, so any slippage between footing and soil occurs within the soil. This study newly defined interface element of the footing-soil system for assessment of ultimate bearing capacity of footing against eccentric vertical load and make clear the failure mechanism of footing for both rough and smooth condition. The study evaluated the influences of eccentric load on the bearing capacity, interaction force distribution under the footing. The obtained results predicted the failure envelopes in vertical and moment loading plan, and compared with those found in the literature.
