Research productivity is one of the crucial measures for academic success in higher education, especially at research universities. It is a criterion for maintaining tenure, having promotion, or getting research grants. So, the pressure of “publish or perish” always depresses academic staff because some of them are productive, while some others are not so. Previous studies indicated that research productivity is influenced by many factors. The factors might relate to individual motivation to do research of each academic staff, and/or to policy for research, infrastructure support for research, or research climate of a university. However, a common pattern which can be used to predict research productivity has never been existed because research productivity varies among contexts. This quantitative study aims to explore factors which have influences on research productivity of academic staff at a research-oriented university in Vietnam. An online questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 526 academic staff of this university. The principal axis factoring analysis has been used to generate factors. 17 factors have been found to be significantly correlated to research productivity. The results will assist leaders of this university in designing and implementing strategic solutions in order to increase research productivity of academic staff.
