Poultry industry of Vietnam has achieved encouraging achievements in the past 10 years. The total flock of poultry from 100 million to now has reached nearly 467 million; meat production reached over 1.2 million tons; egg production reached over 13 billion. Therefore, a large amount of waste chicken feathers has disposed every year that make an enormous challenge for the management of this waste. However, in many countries including Vietnam, the chicken feather has been considered as a valuable by-product of the poultry industry. Indeed, many studies have shown that the keratin in feathers can be used to produce a variety of valuable products such as pillows, diapers, insulation, plastics, mattress covers, etc. Here, we focus on producing a feather absorbent that can use to remove oil from contaminated water. Soap nut, which is traditionally used to produce a natural organic detergent, is used to treat the chicken feather waste as an eco-friendly method for sustainable development. The results showed that the treatment of chicken feather by soap nut detergent was highly effective and can be applied in actual production. In addition, the results also suggest the ability to use chicken feather as an effective oil absorber.
