ABSTRACT
The Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides (Linn.) Nash) were planted in 4 various soil types (the sandy soil with abundant organic matter (S1), the sandy soil with poor organic matter (S2), the clay soil with poor organic matter (S3) and the clay soil with abundant organic matter (S4)), supplemented with different amounts of lead (Pb) (100, 300 and 700ppm and control). It was found that Pb did not affect the growth of the Vetiver grass, even though the uptake amount was increased as applied amount increased. The Vetiver grew best in the sandy soil with abundant organic matter (S1) and worst in the clay soil with poor organic matter (S3). Vetiver’s uptake ability of Pb increase as the Pb concentration in soils increase. Vetiver’s accumulation ability of Pb in shoot and root in various soils descending S1>S2>S3>S4. The accumulation rate of Pb in shoot/ root is very high (9.92 – 87.94%). Therefore, the vetiver grass can be used to remedy soil contaminated with Pb.
