Sustainable development has become an important requirement in many different areas worldwide. In civil engineering field, for instance, designing and constructing buildings/bridges with materials having high-strength and a potential durability under environmental effects, and saving labors would be a new approach trend of modern technology. To obtain above criteria, construction materials are always innovative and develop new materials. This paper presents an overview of the research and development of applications of composite structures in civil engineering. Firstly, the history of applications of traditional and innovative materials for infrastructure construction was discussed with the analyzing advantages and disadvantages of each constituent material. Then, the development and applications of sandwich slab/beam systems and concrete steel composite columns were investigated. Finally, the applications of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) in retrofitting and strengthening concrete structures, seismic resistance purpose and development of FRP-concrete-steel composite structures were studied.
