ABSTRACT
According to the IUCN Red List, the internationally accepted standard for the listing of endangered and threatened species, nonhuman primates native to Vietnam are among the most endangered species in the world. Of those, a highly threatened species is the red-shanked douc (Pygathrix nemaeus). The purpose of this study was to better understand the behavior and ecology of the red-shanked douc and use that information to help establish a community-based conservation program in Danang City, Vietnam to protect the biodiversity of Son Tra Nature Reserve. At present, our research team has established the research site, surveyed the research area for douc abundance, established semi-habituated study groups, and collected behavioral data via focal sampling. Our collaborations with the City of Danang, Danang University, and the Son Tra Forest Rangers have helped to prevent illegal activities from occurring, such as habitat disturbance in the home range of the red-shanked doucs, bird hunting, and leaf collecting. Regular activities in Son Tra have been carried out, such as trash collecting services and educating tourists about the red-shanked douc and its endangered status. In addition, our volunteer program has allowed numerous students from Danang University to gain invaluable research experience. In the future, we plan to continue establishing collaborations with experienced host country nationals for critical long-term research to better protect and preserve primate biodiversity through knowledge-based conservation.
