The technique of earth walls reinforced by steel strip or synthetic reinforcement is used for the construction of art structures for several decades. For urban infrastructure, itself gave an interesting solution to optimizing the use of space and can fit into modern architecture and landscape programs. The technique consist in reinforcing a backfill material with steel strips whose tensile strength is mobilized and used to ensure the internal stability of the wall. An important aspect of these works reside in the steel reinforcements undergo electrochemical corrosion. The aim of this paper is to provide an analysis of the effect of corrosion on the overall behavior of the wall, and of the conditions under which corrosion can lead to failure. The analysis is based on finite element simulations using the multiphase model. Results could be used as a basis to predict the remaining service life of existing walls, and to design monitoring and alert systems.
Key words:
reinforced earth wall, service life, corrosion, finite element analysis, multiphase model.
