TÓM TẮT
The disposal of the red mud exhibits problem not only in Hungary, however, the majority of the European Union and other countries is facing with the same problem, for example Romania also has large amount the red mud disposal facilities. Because of the red mud high metal content can be considered as secondary raw material for it possible utilization. In principle, there are two possibilities for red mud utilization. The first one is its use as a uniform material of special physical and chemical properties. The second option includes processing of red mud, which means separation of different components / metals and transformation each of them into valuable products. Concerning the first option above, among the uses standing out are those reported on the utilization of red mud in building materials, such as cement, bricks, roofing tiles and other ceramic products. Also red mud can be considered as potential catalyst for different type of reactions such as hydro-dealkylation of aromatic compounds and cracking. Iron and metal components (Al, Ti, V, etc.) of red mud determine its catalytic activity. The characteristic features and surface properties of the untreated and thermally treated red mud is important from the possible future utilization of the red mud in different chemical reactions. The structural, physical and chemical, morphological properties were investigated by XRD, BET, AAS, ammonia pulse chemisorption methods. The obtained results support the notion that the red mud can be used for catalytic processes carried out at temperature not above than 500°C (optimum 400-500°C)
