TÓM TẮT
The industrial wastes have been generating significant problems all over the world and the utilization/reprocessing of the industrial waste into secondary raw materials is a distinguished objective. The red mud as a waste of the bauxite processing can be found in tremendous amounts all over the world. which is considered to be a hazardous waste if its pH value is over 12. The use of the red mud had been considered for construction material manufacturing including bricks and tiles, however, due to economic and human health aspects these trials failed to gain industrial applications. The Ajka red mud disaster of year 2010 killed people, and damaged the ecosystem of several surface waters including streams and rivers in the region. The red mud waste disposal facilities could exhibit danger for the surface and underground waters in case of leakage of the reservoirs. It focused the attention of the scientists to consider new ways for the utilization of the red mud. The present paper deals with the utilization of the red mud into two directions, one is the use of the red mud as catalyst for different hydrocarbon reactions and the second one is the recovery of the scandium and other rare earth elements from the red mud. During the catalytic studies hydrogenation and hydrocracking reactions have been studied and it was observed that the red mud exhibit catalytic activity in the above given reactions. The stepwise acidic dissolution of the red mud was studied to separate of the valuable rare earth components.
