T h is review paper presents a com prehensive study on nov el adsorbent materials, namely on m ulti walledcarbonnanotubes(MWCNTs)foroilspillcleanupfrom water.Thesynthesismethods, the waysof their modification including thefunctionalization withmetaloxide nanoparticlesand applications are discussed. The MWCNTs are cost-effective, easy to prepare and exhibit outstanding thermal stability, high selectivity and strong affinity for organic pollutants after su r face functionalization. Variety of m etal ox ides has been used for the modification of MWCNTs such as alumina, titanium-dioxide, zinc-oxide and iron-oxide. The functionalization of the MWCNTs increases the sorption capacity of adsorbents to remove organic materials. The properties of the composite m aterials have shown the next level of use of MWCNTs in the a dsor ption technology. The metal-oxide nanoparticles doped MW CNTs are prom ising adsorbents for pollutant removal from surface waters. These composites are also compatible with green m aterials hence these a re considered as environmentally fr iendly a dsorbents. This review paper deals with functionalization models and theories on the basis of theavailableliteraturein order to provide an understanding the properties of the MWCNTs and their potential use to adsorb hydrocarbonsfrom water.TheextensiveandfrequentuseofMWCNTsasadsorbentsisattributed to their characteristic features and their rem arkable perform ance.
