ABSTRACT
In this paper, we study the performance of a millimeter-wave subcarrier multiplexed radio-over-fiber (MMW/SCM/RoF) system using coherence detection and compare its performance with a direct detection based scheme. A system model for performance analysis is presented, showing the relationship of SNR, BER or receiver sensitivities with power of local oscillator, bit rate, number of subcarrier channels for ASK, QPSK, and BPSK modulation formats. We propose to use sensitivity gain as an important parameter to describe the performance improvement of the coherent detection with respect to the direct detection scheme. Our performance analysis indicates that the coherent detection significantly improves the system performance with a sensitivity gain by approximately 11 dB and 7 dB for system using 100 Gb/s and 500 Gb/s signals, respectively.
