 Applying finite element method in many river's problems

ABSTRACT Finite element method (FEM) is a powerful numerical method which has many advantages comparing with other numerical methods in solving flow problems such as remarkable flexible meshes, easily introduces differential physical characteristics of each element, can solve easily high order differential equations and the other special advantage of the method is conservative.
In recent years, thanks to great achievements of computational mathematics and digital computer, it becomes popular. According to Chorin A.J. algorithm, one can split the governing equations; on the other hand, there are many efficient accuracy methods using in Finite Element technique: Characteristic- based split method, Taylor- Galerkin method which is used to solve the flow problems more and more simply, quickly, efficiently and accuractly (accuracy order 3,4,5…in both space and time).
In this presentation, authors introduce many advantages of Finite Element Method in Flow problems and some softwares established by FEM solving many river problems as:
(i) Flood forecasting at downstream of Han river:
For flood forecasting problems, Softwares can forecast the continue or discontinue water level, the velocity fields for flooding, river bed- deposition or erosion; can calculate subcritical or supercritical flow.
(ii) River training of curved reach in Hoa- My village of Ve river:
The curve of Ve river in Hoa- My village was strongly eroded. In this curve, firstly, authors use empirical formulas for determining the maximum admissible radius of curvature and the distances among the groynes. Next, authors apply RIVER2D software to study the groyne fields; to verify all other constrained conditions of problem and after that adjust the groyne locations and groyne angles.
(iii) Calculation on localised scour at Cau-Rong bridge:
Until now, most formulae for calculating the localised scour depths around the column piers of river bridges have been based on the average velocity of one-dimensional flow in open channels which differ greatly from the real velocity field; consequently, the calculation of the localised scour depths usually results in big differences compared with the real situation.
In this presentation, the authors calculate the localized scour depths of the Cau-Rong Bridge piers, Han river , Danang City, by using the 2D software RIVER2D for calculating the velocity field and then authors use analytical formulas or semi-empirical formulas that are adjusted parameters based on field data measurements to find the depth of the scours at piers of Cau-Rong bridge; thus the results will reflect the reality better.
